Abstract

The Worktext in Discrete Structures: Needs Analysis is a study that focuses on the needs of developing additional instructional materials such as worktext that would cater the curricular needs of the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science first year students enrolled in the course Discrete Structures. Specifically, it determined the level of performance of the BSCS first year students enrolled in Discrete Structures during the second semester of school years 2011-2012 and 2012-2013; and it determined the status of instructional materials in Discrete Structures in terms of availability. The study made use of the descriptive method of research with document analysis and factual inventory as tools in gathering the needed data. The researchers utilized statistical tools such as frequency counts and mean in analysing and interpreting the gathered data. The study has the following findings: 1) the level of performance of the BSCS first year students enrolled in Discrete Structures during the second semester of school years 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 is satisfactory; and 2) there is a total of nine distinct instructional materials in Discrete Structures that are available at the library of College of Computer Science, DMMMSU-South La Union Campus. The following conclusions were drawn based from the findings of the study: 1) the level of performance of the BSCS first year students enrolled in Discrete Structures during the second semester of school years 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 still needs improvement; and 2) the available instructional materials are not enough. The researchers recommend that the College of Computer Science should develop a worktext in Discrete Structures to cater curricular needs of students for better performance and would serve as an instructional material to supplement the available books in Discrete Structure of the college; and the college should continue purchasing latest books in Discrete Structures to meet the minimum standards in providing curricular needs of students.
